Vice-Chancellor’s Awards & Cambridge International Scholarships

The aim of the Vice-Chancellor's Awards and Cambridge International Scholarships is to ensure that the 250 highest ranked students, irrespective of nationality, receive full financial support to undertake research leading to a PhD. The Scholarships pay the University Composition Fee and a maintenance allowance sufficient for a single person.

The President’s PhD Scholarships aims to provide up to 50 research students with great potential the opportunity to work within their chosen research field with the support of an excellent supervisor.

University College London (UCL)

UCL Overseas Research Scholarships

The UCL Overseas Research Scholarships (UCL-ORS) aim to attract high-quality international students to UCL to undertake research. Approximately 35 UCL-ORS awards are available annually.

The University of Edinburgh

Principal’s Career Development PhD Scholarships (PCDS)

Moray House School of Education offers two fully-funded Principal’s Career Development PhD Scholarships across any area of study within the doctoral programme, for studies commencing in 2019-20. This scholarship covers the UK/EU tuition fees plus a stipend, amount to be confirmed for 2019-20. Applicants for this award will also be considered for two further Principal’s Career Development PhD Scholarships which will be available to applicants of all Schools in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. Subject to satisfactory progress, the scholarships are awarded for three years.

Edinburgh Global Research Scholarship

30 Edinburgh Global Research Scholarships have been awarded for session 2019-2020. Each scholarship will covers the difference between the tuition fee for a UK/EU postgraduate student and that chargeable to an overseas postgraduate student. The awards do not cover maintenance expenses.

Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarship for Research Excellence

Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarships for Research Excellence offer seven eligible applicants the opportunity to join our Doctoral Academy community for 3 years on a full-time basis. The Scholarship includes tuition fees, an annual stipend (in line with UKRI rates, updated annually and currently at £14,777 for 2018/19) for three years, and your academic School will also contribute towards research costs. The first quarterly stipend payment will be made available shortly after your course commences.

Chancellor's International Scholarship

25 Chancellor's International Scholarships available to be awarded to the most outstanding international PhD applicants. The scholarship includes a full payment of overseas tuition fees (worth £22,860) and a maintenance stipend in line with UKRI rates (provisional £15,009 for full time award holders.

University of Nottingham

Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship for Research Excellence (International)

Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarships for Research Excellence aim to recognise and reward applications from outstanding international students from the Faculties of Arts, Medicine and Health Sciences, Science and Social Sciences.

University of Surrey

Vice-Chancellor's Studentship Award

This funded studentship (international students only) covers international fee and stipend of £15,000, a Research Training Support Grant of £1,000 and financial support for research materials and consumables (if successfully applied for) up to the value of £2,000 per annum.

University of Glasgow

Chancellors Award

The University of Glasgow has a total of 20 Chancellors Awards available. The Award is available to students entering any of the University’s Colleges and are awarded as a tuition fee discount.

Lord Kelvin Adam Smith PhD Scholarships

The Lord Kelvin Adam Smith (LKAS) PhD Scholarships are the University of Glasgow’s flagship scholarships. To date over 100 fully funded PhD projects have been created.

Carnegie Caledonian PhD Scholarship

Nominations are sought from prospective PhD supervisors only for the Carnegie/Caledonian PhD Scholarships 2018-19. The Carnegie Trust is funding 15 PhD scholarships across all universities within Scotland. The University of Glasgow has been allocated 7 nominations (out of 60 allowed in total across all Scottish HEIs).

University Post Graduate Research Committee Scholarships

Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis - applications are assessed on the basis of academic success and qualifications, experience, research background, a clear well-articulated research proposal, the potential impact of the research and a good match with supervisor/department expertise.

University of Leeds

Leeds International Doctoral Scholarship

Postgraduate students at Leeds benefit from around £10 million of funding being available from the University and externally. Scholarships are available to International, UK and EU students. Individual University Schools also offer some scholarships, and substantial numbers of studentships funded by the UK Research Councils are available for postgraduate study at Leeds for UK and EU students.

Queen Mary University of London

Principal's Postgraduate Research Studentships

These are available to applicants of any nationality, for PhDs in any area of the Humanities and Social Sciences, Science and Engineering. There is no separate application process for these awards but they are often tied to advertised projects so check the departmental webpage for specific information.

Turing Institute PhD Studentships

The Alan Turing Institute and Queen Mary University of London offer a number of places each year to motivated graduate students to complete a fully funded PhD. The Turing doctoral studentship scheme combines the strengths and expertise of world-class universities with the Turing’s unique position as the UK’s national institute for data science and artificial intelligence, to offer an exceptional PhD programme.

Faculty Postgraduate Scholarships

A number of Faculty Postgraduate bursaries and scholarships are available for students wishing to study for a Masters degree, a Masters Degree followed by a PhD (“1+3”), or for a PhD degree within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

York Graduate Research School scholarships for overseas research students

These prestigious PhD scholarships, awarded by the York Graduate Research School, offer full funding (covering 100% of tuition fees, a stipend commensurate with the UKRI rate, plus a research training support grant) for the duration of a student’s enrolment period.
